Hello world
Time to live up to my handle
I was an early adopter of social media, Facebook first of course, then Twitter (never to be called by that other name), more recently Bluesky and Threads. I’ve always been Writerchick in those spaces, I have been a prolific poster of my opinions on politics, current events, reality TV, books and movies - but perversely I kept my “real” writing to myself, hoarding and hiding my deepest thoughts like Gollum with the Ring.
There is something so intimate about expressing your personal thoughts. More intimate than nudity. When you think about it, bodies are all pretty much the same, the shape and size and skin colour may differ but the mechanics are the same. Thoughts though, thoughts are different. Thoughts are revealing, thoughts express your vulnerabilities, your deepest desires, your fears. Thoughts can be dangerous when expressed. Especially these days.
So why now? Why after all of these years am I driven to put myself out there and share my thoughts and feelings?
I’m not narcissistic or driven by ego, I don’t think my words are any more important than anyone else’s. I don’t think I have any special insight. What I do believe is that the words and thoughts of people like me, a regular person trying to live right, do good things and be kind to my neighbours, are being drowned out by the incessant ravings of a far right fringe that is being controlled by a powerful group of of billionaires desperate to instill fear and suspicion in people across the world in order to maintain their dwindling power and hoard their wealth.
The only way to combat this insanity is for good people to speak out. There are more of us than there are of them. It’s time to raise my voice and become part of the conversation.
Like the Ring, thoughts and ideas are precious, in every sense of the word. “Precious” means having great value, highly esteemed and too important to waste. In these dark times, we cannot afford to waste our thoughts and words, we must speak out and bring light into the world.
When I logged on and started creating this Substack, the system asked me what category I wanted to be in - I was stumped. Am I going to be strictly political and talk about news and current events? Am I going to talk about personal experiences? Am I going to joke about the antics on Below Deck or the Housewives?
Yes, yes and yes. I’m probably going to write all of the above. Political opinion posts will definitely happen, but there does need to be light amongst the shadow so you can expect some humour, some snarky commentary on reality television and more. I am new here, so I will learn to segment my posts according to topic so if you don’t want to read my thoughts on the insufferable Kizzie from Below Deck Med you can scroll by that one.
I also want to get to know anyone out there that is actually reading my words, so please do comment and share. I will respond to your posts.
Let’s share some thoughts, have some fun and be voice we want to hear.
